Motivational Interviewing Basics: Using A Patient Centered Approach to Strengthen Internal Motivation for Change among Patients Using Substances
Motivational interviewing (MI) has emerged as one of the most critical evidence-based approach when working with patients to promote behavior change (Frost et al., 2018) . Originally developed in the context of treating substance use disorders, MI is a collaborative method of communication that pays particular attention to the language of change (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). MI helps to strengthen intrinsic motivation for change by exploring the patient’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance, partnership, evocation and compassion. The MI approach has been researched extensively in diverse settings, including primary care, mental health, addictions, education, and corrections (DiClimente et al. 2017). The 4-hour training will review the four processes and spirit of MI, patient-centered communications skills, change and sustain talk, and approaches to patients who are “resistant” to change. Multiple learning approaches will be used throughout the course, including didactics, video demonstrations, and role plays.
This program is intended for clinical and non-clinical personnel in health service agencies that serve individuals in need of substance use disorder treatments.

- Apply patient-centered MI skills to help elicit and strengthen the internal motivation for change

The ACCME defines “’relevant’ financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest.

Circumstances create a conflict of interest when an individual has an opportunity to affect CME content about products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she has a financial relationship.
