HIV, AIDS & Black Health and Wellness in the Current Socio-Cultural Milieu [Overcoming Health Inequities to Advance Health Outcomes: a Health and Human Justice Framing]
The key premise in this lecture/discussion is that historical factors, including policy and structural factors, have set the foundations for the current health inequities facing many US communities. Therefore, efforts to resolve discrete health inequities in medical, public health behavioral health areas require not just attention to these factors, but deliberative work to underdo these historical underpinnings.
Reducing and ultimately eliminating health inequities requires interventions that apply the best of clinical and biomedical interventions in tandem with macro-structural reforms. Minus this multi-system approach, health inequalities remain enveloped in a shallow narrative that leads to tinkering with the edges rather than addressing the deeply embedded sources of the disequitable system.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe specific examples of non-medicalized, value-added services in the eradication of health inequalities and human rights (practice and policy).
- Apply actionable steps to support diverse communities’ routine HIV/AIDS engagement in and with clinical practices and achieving beneficial outcomes.
- Critique diverse examinations of the meaning of race in health inequality research, differentiating between the biological, genetic, psychological, AND social categorizations of people.

Darrell P. Wheeler, PhD, MPH, MSW
Darrell P. Wheeler, PhD, MPH, MSW, is the 9th President of the State University New York New Paltz. Prior administrative positions: Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs Iona College, Dean of the School of Social Welfare and Vice President for Public Engagement at the University at Albany SUNY, Dean School of Social Work Loyola University Chicago and academic positions at Hunter College CUNY, Columbia University, and the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.
Wheeler has extensive scholarly work with local and national Black men who have sex with men (MSM) communities, serves on the US Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA); Executive Management Committee of the HIV Prevention Trials Network; co-chairs the HIV Prevention Trial Networks HPTN Scholars Program.
His research, teaching and community engagement work focus is one innovative programs and policy initiatives related to health with marginalized and oppressed groups.
