Dr. Rubin is the Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program of Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital and the Director of Postgraduate Education for Massachusetts General Hospital. He also serves as the Executive Director for the MGH Psychiatry Academy.
Dr. Rubin completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in general psychiatry at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center prior to his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at MGH and McLean hospital. Following fellowship, Dr. Rubin joined the faculty of New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center where he served as Director of Inpatient Services, Director of the Day Hospital, Site Training Director and ultimately as Service Chief before returning to MGH and McLean to assume the directorship of the program that trained him.
Dr. Rubin’s biological research focuses on the genotypic and phenotypic characterization of social withdrawal in children and adolescents, with a particular emphasis on how this relates to severe depression and anxiety in youth. Dr. Rubin also conducts medical education research in innovation, design, implementation, dissemination and outcome measurement.
Dr. Rubin’s clinical career has largely concentrated on severe manifestations of psychopathology, particularly in the realm of depression, anxiety and neuropsychiatric illness. He has extensive experience in inpatient, residential, day hospital and emergency room care and administration and regularly performs institutional level consults to improve clinical standards and outcomes for those environments.
Dr. Rubin is an invited lecturer nationally on topics related to withdrawn behavior in youth, the treatment of pediatric depression and medical education across the medical student to postgraudate continuum. He also frequently consults to the popular media, and was featured in Horizon Films’ documentary The Passage of Time.
