June 8, 2023: Session 4: Adolescent Substance Use
Adolescent Substance Use
James McKowen, PhD
June 8, 2023
Session 4: 4:00-5:30PM EDT
Health care workers and school officials cite a variety of factors that contribute to inadequate screening and management of substance abuse disorders, including:
- Inadequate training in identification of substance use disorders.
- Pessimistic/negative attitudes about patients with substance use and the available treatment.
- Inability to identify treatment resources for patients who screen positive for substance use.
Many educators and school staff members may lack the necessary understanding and skills to identify and address substance use. This can lead to misinterpretation of the behavior as simple defiance or a lack of motivation, which can exacerbate the student's distress and contribute to poor outcomes. Without adequate training and support, school staff may struggle to effectively support students who are experiencing substance use disorders. This may include difficulty communicating with families, coordinating services across different professionals, and navigating legal and ethical considerations. Schools may not have a clear and consistent approach to addressing substance use disorders, which can lead to inconsistent or ineffective interventions. This can result in academic struggles and negative long-term outcomes for the student. This curriculum addresses these areas of focus specifically.
Target Audience
This program is intended for psychologists, social workers, educators, and license mental health counselors.
