Culturally informed psychotherapy in a polarized world

This presentation will explore psychoanalytic understandings of sociocultural context in psychotherapy, focusing on a framework for the systematic inclusion of cultural competence as a core emphasis of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In applying this framework, there will be a special emphasis on exploring identity among immigrants and the 2ndgeneration in contemporary U.S. society, amidst sociopolitical polarization. This presentation provides a framework for the systematic inclusion of sociocultural issues as core to psychodynamic theory and practice, with the aim of improving access to culturally informed mental health care.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
1.Describe ways in which the sociocultural context of the client and the therapist influence conceptualizations of health and pathology in development.
2. Explain how psychoanalytic theory informs and deepens an understanding of sociocultural context in psychotherapy.
3. Identify how experiences of privilege and oppression contribute to complex and sometimes contradictory cultural identifications, and challenging dynamics within the therapeutic relationship

Usha Tummala-Narra, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the Director of Community-Based Education at the Albert and Jessie Danielsen Institute and Research Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University.

Usha Tummala-Narra, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the Director of Community-Based Education at the Albert and Jessie Danielsen Institute and Research Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University. Her research and scholarship focus on immigration,trauma, race, and culturally informed psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Her publications include over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in books. She is also in Independent Practice and works primarily with survivors of trauma from diverse sociocultural backgrounds. Dr. Tummala-Narra is an Associate Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and the Asian American Journal of Psychology. She is a member of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in American Psychoanalysis, initiated by the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is the author of Psychoanalytic Theory and Cultural Competence in Psychotherapy(2016) and the editor of Trauma and Racial Minority Immigrants: Turmoil, Uncertainty, and Resistance(2021), both published by the American Psychological Association Books.
