Thursday, May 9th, 2024

12:00-1:00 P.M., Via Zoom

John L Shuster Jr, M.D. Director, Clinical Resource Hub

US Dept of Veterans Affairs MidSouth Healthcare Network

Neuropsychiatric complications of advanced and terminal illness (depression, anxiety, delirium)are very common with adverse impacts on symptom burden, functional statusand quality of life. While expert management of these common symptoms and disorders is foundational to excellent care at life’s end, it is important to broaden the scope of psychiatry’s potential contributions to palliative care. This presentation will highlight application of core psychiatric skills to the care of patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses. In addition to providing specialized expertise in the neuropsychiatric complications of advanced disease, Dr. Shuster will present a case that psychiatrists are uniquely well suited to provide care focused on human thriving at life’s end
