Deep Learning Health Systems: Discover Causes, Cure and Prevent, For Everyone
This inaugural integrated Mass General Brigham Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds will describe the need for, examples of how to build, and some potential use cases for Deep Learning Health Systems: health care systems that routinely collect and integrate deep phenotyping as well as Real-World Data from electronic health systems, to continuously improve access, quality, equity, and outcomes.
Target Audience
This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Interns and Nurses.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe why we need, how we can build, and what the benefits are of a Deep Learning Health System.
- Identify key components of a Deep Learning Health system, including their longitudinal Real-World electronic health system data sources, as well as automated data processing and analytic pipelines.
- Apply this knowledge of Deep Learning Health System, to explain how they could be deployed to help personalize depression treatments and prevent adverse outcomes such as suicide.

Philip Sung-En Wang, M.D., Dr.P.H.
Philip Wang, M.D., Dr.P.H. currently serves as the Interim Vice Chair of Psychiatry for Academic Affairs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Professor of the Practice of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS), and a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He also directs the new Learning Health Systems Center at BWH, which helps systems collect and integrate digital and Real-World Data from EHRs and administrative claims, to continuously improve access, quality, equity, and outcomes.
Dr. Wang completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry, medical school, masters and doctoral degrees in epidemiology, as well as psychiatry residency and chief residency, all at Harvard University. He was a faculty member at HMS and BWH until 2006, when he went to serve as Deputy Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He has also served as the Deputy Medical Director and Director of Research for the American Psychiatric Association (APA) where he helped develop the APA’s national quality reporting registry (PsychPRO) and oversaw the recent text revision of the DSM. He is currently Co-PI of an NIMH P50 ALACRITY Center grant, as well as an NIMH T32 Fellowship Training grant through the Harvard-T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has also been awarded research grants from CMS, NIDA, AHRQ, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He has served on several NIH Study Sections, as well as the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee, FDA Medical Devices Advisory Committee, and FDA Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee.
