A Primer on GLP-1 Analogs for Psychiatrists

 

Description: This lecture serves to explore the pharmacology of the GLP-1 analogs family of medications. It will focus specifically on utilization strategies for psychiatric patients regarding medication-induced weight-gain. The primary impact of GLP-1 analogs on psychiatric diseases and specific considerations will also be addressed.

Target Audience

This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Social Workers, Interns, and Nurses.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the pharmacology of the GLP-1 analogs for weight loss indications.
  2. Apply the principles of weight management to psychiatric patients at risk for weight gain.
  3. Describe the novel utilization of GLP-1 analogs for psychiatric diseases.

Armen Yerevanian, MD

Dr. Armen Yerevanian is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Division of Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed his medical school training at Case Western Reserve University, followed by internal medicine residency and chief resident year at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He joined MGH for his endocrine fellowship and completed his NIH NRSA research fellowship under the mentorship of Alexander Soukas MD PhD. As an Instructor, he received a K08 Career Development Award from the National Institute of Aging to study mechanisms of lifespan extension associated with manipulations in the flavoproteome. His research focus is studying hormetic mechanisms in aging and metabolic diseases, with an emphasis on functional genomics in C. elegans and the translational biology of conserved stress responses. His recent work demonstrates the lifespan-extending impact of riboflavin depletion and micronutrient-based mimicry of caloric restriction pathways. He attends the MGH Diabetes Center and MGH Neuroendocrine and Pituitary Center, with a clinical focus on diabetes, obesity, and metabolism.
