November 7, 2024: 15th George B. Murray, M.D., Limbic Lecture in Psychiatry - Mesolimbic Function in Eating Disorders and Obesity: From Mechanisms to Treatment (Northern)
Mesolimbic Function in Eating Disorders and Obesity: From Mechanisms to Treatment
Description: The neurobiology of food intake is highly complex and involves redundant homeostatic and mesolimbic pathways that developed over millennia to ensure survival in times of food scarcity. This complexity contributes to the development and maintenance of disordered eating and metabolism. In this lecture, we will review the methods used to map these pathways in individuals with eating disorders, appetitive endophenotypes of major depression, and individuals with a genetic form of obesity and hyperphagia. In addition, we will discuss the promise of translating observational studies to inform mechanisms underlying treatment and identification of novel treatment targets for these conditions.
Target Audience
This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify homeostatic and mesolimbic regions involved in food intake.
- Describe how function within mesolimbic circuitry is altered in low-weight eating disorders, appetitive phenotypes of mood disorders, and obesity.
- Explain how function in mesolimbic regions shifts during treatment for these disorders and serves as a predictor of outcomes.
SPEAKER(S)
Laura Holsen, PhD
Laura Holsen, PhD
Laura Holsen is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS), and a faculty member in the Division of Women’s Health, Department of Medicine, and in the Department of Psychiatry at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). She also serves as Director of Research Training for the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology at BWH. Dr. Holsen received an M.S. in Developmental Psychology from Vanderbilt University. As a graduate student in Child and Developmental Psychology from the University of Kansas, where she received her Ph.D. under the mentorship of Dr. Cary Savage. She then completed postdoctoral training in affective neuroscience with Dr. Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Research in Dr. Holsen’s lab at BWH/HMS examines the interaction between eating behavior, stress, and reward using functional MRI and neuroendocrine assessment in eating and mood disorders and obesity, with a goal of ameliorating the negative health outcomes of these conditions through identification of modifiable neurobiological targets that drive appetite, eating behaviors, and weight change.
