This talk provides an overview of the course of depressive disorders in women over the lifespan, focusing on the reproductive lifecycle, from menarche to menopause. The lecture will characterize female-specific contributions to depression risk, including hormonal and comorbid symptoms, during midlife and the menopause transition. Implications for clinical strategies and available treatment approaches will be discussed.

Hadine Joffe, MD, MSC
Hadine Joffe, MD, MSc, is a clinical reproductive neuroscientist and academic psychiatrist whose research has advanced understanding of depression and related neurocognitive symptoms in midlife women. Dr. Joffe’s research focuses on the mechanisms, course, and treatment of depression, insomnia, thermoregulatory symptoms, and fatigue in women navigating the menopause transition or undergoing breast cancer treatment. She has led NIH-funded studies for over 25 years, including as Principal Investigator on three R01S and a U54 Specialized Center of Research Excellence (SCORE) focused on sex differences in health and disease.
Her work integrates neural, hormonal, neurosteroid, stress, and autonomic pathways to better characterize the biological underpinnings of depression and associated symptoms in midlife women, and their downstream consequences on metabolism and anti-estrogen adherence.
At the Connors Center, she leads research initiatives addressing equity in drug development and the effects of stress and adversity on women’s health. She is a committed mentor, having supported the careers of over 100 investigators and clinicians. Her contributions have been recognized through numerous local and national awards, and she continues to shape the fields of women’s mental health and translational neuroscience through research, mentorship, and leadership.
