December 18, 2025: 14th Gary Jacobson, M.D., Susan B. Jacobson, Lecture on Promising Innovations in Psychiatry - Targeting Circuits to Personalize Care: Developing Precision Neuromodulation Therapies for Suicide (Northern)
Targeting Circuits to Personalize Care: Developing Precision Neuromodulation Therapies for Suicide
Description:
This lecture presents a biomarker-driven framework for precision neuromodulation, illustrated through the development of targeted interventions for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. It traces an empirical pathway from the identification of a suicide-specific response biomarker using combined ECT and MRI to hypothesis generation within an experimental medicine framework, culminating in a novel fMRI-guided accelerated TMS protocol demonstrating early evidence for target engagement and clinical efficacy.
Target Audience
This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe key neural circuits implicated in suicidality and their relevance to clinical assessment and treatment planning.
- Explain how advances in neuroimaging and neuromodulation inform personalized targeting strategies for suicide-focused interventions.
- Apply circuit-based principles to conceptualize individualized neuromodulation approaches for patients at elevated suicide risk.
SPEAKER(S)
Joan Camprodon, MD, MPH

Joan Camprodon, MD, MPH
Dr. Camprodon is the Chief of the Division of Neuropsychiatry and Interventional Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Harvard Medical School.
Clinically, he is the founding director of the MGH Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) clinical service, co-director of the MGH Psychiatric Neurosurgery Committee, and an attending physician in the departments of Psychiatry (Neuropsychiatry) and Neurology (Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology). He created and now co-directs the MGH/MGB clinical fellowship in Interventional Neuropsychiatry and Neuromodulation, the first of its kind in the country, and he is board-certified in Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry
Scientifically, he directs the Laboratory for Circuit Neuroscience and Neuromodulation and serves as a founding member of the executive committee of the MGH Interdisciplinary Brain Center. Methodologically, his research uses multimodal combinations of neuromodulation (noninvasive, convulsive, and surgical), neuroimaging, neurophysiology, behavioral, and clinical assays to investigate brain circuits and plasticity. The scope of his research includes basic, translational, and clinical projects focused on human circuit neuroscience. Projects in his laboratory address (1) the anatomy, physiology, and behavioral computations of disease-relevant networks, (2) the investigation of pathophysiological mechanisms at the circuit level (with an emphasis on transdiagnostic processes and the role of plasticity), and (3) the translational and clinical development of tools to support clinical care and decision-making (e.g., biomarker discovery and treatment development). Critical efforts are geared towards applying the paradigms and methods of human systems/cognitive neuroscience to discover treatment targets and develop individualized precision circuit therapeutics, with an emphasis on device neuromodulation.
