Psychological Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children, Teens and Young Adults
Pediatric patients have been affected by the COVID crisis but not in the way one would have predicted. We have had to learn as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyday some new information arises and sometimes causes us to pivot every 2 days, every week, each month. A significant issue has been the isolation, lack of separation and reduced exposure to novel situations that have all adversely affected children. From infants to young adults we have witnessed the rapid escalation in mental health effects. We have never faced anything like this across many generations in clinical staff serving pediatric patients. So we hope to learn more from Dr. Callanan who has intensively worked with patients and families affected socially and emotionally by this crisis. She will discuss the mental health consequences as we experience the pandemic and stressors it brings firsthand and ways to help and support patients. The lessons learned from this pandemic will hopefully help us to anticipate and minimize the stressors that have plagued the nation’s children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Describe how COVID-19 stressors impact functioning across age groups.
- Plan strategies and techniques to support the social-emotional health of patients during this pandemic and others that may arise.
