The Essentials of Autism and Associated Psychopathology (Residents)
The objective of this course is to offer an up-to-date review on the prevalence and clinical characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in psychiatrically referred populations of youth and offer strategies for rapid assessment of ASD in clinic settings. The presentation will provide an overview of the assessment & management of ASD and associated psychopathology in psychiatrically referred populations with special emphasis on genetic, cognitive, and neural correlates of ASD and ASD management.
Through this presentation, participants will acquire knowledge of the DSM based diagnostic evolution of ASD, the higher than expected prevalence and the characteristics of ASD in psychiatrically referred populations, and the challenges associated with recognizing ASD in this population. Following which effective screening and evaluation strategies, including appropriate assessment measures will be discussed for diagnosing ASD in a psychiatry clinic setting. The course will profile the psychopathological burden associated with ASD and present the gender differences in the clinical presentation of ASD and associated psychopathology in psychiatrically referred youth.
