Ned H. Cassem Professor of Psychiatry in the field of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation - Harvard Medical School

Dr. Theodore Stern is the Chief of The Avery D. Weisman, M.D. Psychiatry Consultation Service (a service that performs more than 3,500 new psychiatric consultations each year on medical and surgical floors) and the Director of the Office of Clinical Careers at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the first endowed Professor of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation at HMS.  A graduate of the New York University School of Medicine, he completed his Psychiatric Residency at the MGH (in 1979). Since then, he has focused his efforts at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, as a clinician, clinical researcher, and a teacher.

Dr. Stern has mentored scores at the MGH and co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters (with more than 150 other psychiatrists, internists, cardiologists, and surgeons) as well as 17 books (including the MGH Comprehensive Clinical Psychiatry textbook (with an on-line question and answer companion), the Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of General Hospital Psychiatry, 4/e, 5/e, and  6/e, The MGH Guide to Primary Care Psychiatry (1/e and 2/e), Psychiatry Update and Board Preparation (1/e and 2/e), Facing Cancer, Massachusetts General Hospital: 1000 Psychiatry Questions and Annotated Answers, and the Review Manual in Psychosomatic Medicine.  He has lectured across the nation on medical psychiatry and directed numerous postgraduate courses (including “Emergency Psychiatry and Crisis Intervention" and “Psychiatric Care of the Medically Ill: A Review of Psychosomatic Medicine”).

Dr. Stern is a Past-President of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) and is a Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the APM. An ad hoc reviewer for more than 30 journals, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Psychosomatics and serves on the editorial boards of seven peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he has worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners (on panels for standard-setting, item-modeling, and item-writing).  On three occasions he has won the coveted “Best Teacher Award” from the graduating residents at the MGH/McLean Hospital Psychiatric Residency Training Program and he has received the Thomas P. Hackett Award from the APM (its highest honor).
