Carol North, MD, MPE, DLFAPA
Dr. Carol North serves as Medical Director of the Altshuler Center for Education & Research at Metrocare Services in Dallas, Texas. Holding The Nancy and Ray L. Hunt Chair in Crisis Psychiatry, she is a board-certified psychiatrist and Professor with tenure in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where she is Director of the Division of Trauma and Disaster. Dr. North completed medical school and residency training in psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by a NIMH postdoctoral fellowship and a Masters degree, both in psychiatric epidemiology, at the same institution. She has been an international leader in shaping the science of disaster mental health, continuously conducting federally funded research for more than a quarter of a century and studying 3,500 survivors of 15 major disasters of all types.
Dr. North has >300 peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals from her research. For decades, Dr. North has devoted a large proportion of her professional efforts directly providing and directing clinical care services, having served as both director and member of the consultation psychiatry and emergency psychiatry services, inpatient psychiatry attending, and member of the electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) clinical care team at Washington University, in addition to overseeing and providing treatment for clinics dedicated to homeless and indigent populations in the St. Louis community and leading community disaster mental health response activities in Missouri and Texas.
