Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approaches for Perinatal Mental Health and Wellbeing

This course will focus on the application of cognitive behavioral interventions to support mental health and well-being among individuals across pregnancy and the postpartum (i.e., the perinatal period). An understanding of common mental health conditions, risk factors, and effective psychotherapy treatments available is important for any providers serving perinatal individuals. This course will provide a comprehensive review of the literature on effective psychotherapy interventions for perinatal mental health, with a focus on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches. Focused material will also be presented regarding clinical considerations for the application of CBT in the perinatal period for common conditions, such as anxiety and depression, as well as for trauma and insomnia. Considerations for addressing substance use disorders in the perinatal period will also be covered. The course will overview topics such as critical gaps in treatment, novel delivery approaches to address treatment gaps, and important national resources relevant to perinatal mental health.
