Lowell Schools: April 1, 2026 - Non Suicidal Self Injury
Non Suicidal Self Injury
Maggie Gorraiz, PhD
Date: April 14. 2026
9:00 - 10:00 AM EDT
Despite the rising prevalence of NSSI among children and adolescents, a significant gap exists between how often school-based staff encounter students who self-injure and their access to practical, research-informed guidance for responding effectively leaving even dedicated clinicians uncertain about how to respond. This training was designed to build a shared foundation in understanding what NSSI is, why students may engage in it, and how to respond in ways that are clinically sound and effective. Participants will leave better equipped to identify and distinguish NSSI from suicidal behavior, understand its functions and presentations, apply practical strategies and skills with students, navigate conversations with families, and recognize appropriate referral pathways.
