Lowell Public Schools & MGH Psychiatry Academy Training Series

Despite progress made in the area of school psychiatry over the past 2 decades, there remains much to be learned about the provision of health care in the school setting. Some of the continued struggles in schools relate to broad concerns about child and adolescent psychiatry generally (lack of diagnostic specificity, concerns about efficacies of treatments, etc.,) but there are also school specific concerns, especially following the decreased socialization of youth following the COVID pandemic and continued concerns about learning gaps in children post-pandemic. This 8 session training program will concentrate on issues that are particularly pertinent to schools. In addition to providing the most up-to-date information on the most frequent struggles in youth (adverse childhood experiences, anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicidal ideation), school specific issues such as school refusal, critical incident and crisis response, antiracism in the school setting, and anti-discrimination in the school setting will also be explored.

Target Audience

This program is intended for psychologists, social workers, educators, and license mental health counselors.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the common symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and suicidal ideation in the school setting.
  2. Describe evidence-based approaches to critical incident responses in schools.
  3. Explain the role of adverse childhood experiences in the development and progression of mental health and physical health problems in youth.

*Will provide individual learning objectives per lecture.
