Advancing the Science and Care of Women with PTSD and Substance Use Disorders

Description:
Women experience disproportionately high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal trauma, and increasing rates of substance use disorders (SUD). This presentation will examine biological, psychological, and social factors that may contribute to the development and persistence of co-occurring PTSD+SUD in women, as well as advances in treatment. Particular attention will be given to the shift from sequential treatment models and abstinence-based approaches to integrated, trauma-focused care including harm reduction approaches. Empirical evidence from clinical trials, including studies evaluating Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE), large-scale collaborative programs of research focused on PTSD+SUD, and current clinical practice guidelines will be reviewed. The presentation will conclude by identifying critical directions for the field.

Sudie E. Back, PhD
Dr. Sudie Back received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia in 2004. She completed her clinical internship training with a specialization in the treatment of substance use disorders at Yale University School of Medicine (2002-2003). She then completed her postdoctoral training at MUSC in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (2004-2005). Dr. Back joined the MUSC faculty in 2005 and is currently a Professor and Director of the NIH-sponsored DART research training program at MUSC. Dr. Back is also a Staff Psychologist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA. Her primary research interests focus on the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans and civilians. She is involved in both psychosocial/behavioral and pharmacologic clinical trials, as well as laboratory-based and neuroimaging studies. Her research is funded through NIH, the Department of Defense, and the VA. She is the prior/current recipient of a Career Development Award (K23), several R01s, an Independent Scientist Award (K02), and a Fulbright Scholar Award (Australia). Dr. Back is actively engaged in mentoring trainees, including current/past psychology interns, psychiatry residents, postdoctoral fellows, and early-stage investigators.
