Becoming culturally humble: A sociocultural approach to mental health in 2024

 

Description: In this grand rounds, Dr. Trinh will discuss key trends in sociocultural psychiatry, including the importance of addressing culture, social determinants of health, racism, and trauma in clinical practice. She will compare cultural competency, cultural humility, and structural competency frameworks and provide recommendations for culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices for mental health clinicians.

Target Audience

This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.

Nhi-Ha Trinh, MD, MPH

Dr. Nhi-Ha Trinh serves as Associate Director of the Hinton Society at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at HMS. She is committed to fostering a more diverse and inclusive academic community where all can thrive. She is devoted to educating students, trainees, staff, and faculty on cultural humility practices and trauma-informed care to improve patient care, the hospital workplace culture, and the medical learning environment. Dr. Trinh has served as faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) since 2007.  

Dr. Trinh earned her MD at the University of California, San Francisco, and her master’s in public health at the University of California at Berkeley, specializing in epidemiology. She completed residency training in adult psychiatry at the MGH/McLean adult psychiatry training program and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at McLean Hospital. She has served as a residency training mentor for the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Training Program since 2012. She has two decades of experience in mentoring students, trainees,  and faculty, particularly those from historically marginalized backgrounds.
