4th Arthur N. Papas, M.D., Family Lecture in Psychiatry: Beyond Magic Bullets: From Racial Capitalism of Opioids to Social Technologies in Psychiatry

This talk will use the tools of social analysis to examine the racialization of pharmaceutical practices and US drug policies, and to explain the changing demographics and priorities of treatment for substance use disorder over the past two decades. It describes an approach – “structural competency” – through which practitioners can see and intervene upon structural drivers and social determinants of health through collaboration with community organizations, health-relevant institutional sectors and policy-makers.

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe two social technologies that explain the racial identity of the US opioid crisis 
  2. List at least two examples of structural factors that are causing unequal outcomes from substance use
  3. Describe at least two clinical interventions to ameliorate structural drivers of harms from substance use
