11th Armand M. Nicholi Jr., M.D., and Ingrid Nicholi, Lecture in Psychiatry: Religious Participation, Church and Family Social Support Networks of Black and White Adults

Religious participation and religious coping are a critical aspect of the daily lives for the vast majority of Americans. Family and church networks provide social support assistance to individuals across the life span for both Black and white Americans. Research findings confirm that emotional support from family and church members have positive impacts on the well-being of their members, including lower reports of depressive symptoms, whereas negative interactions with family and church members are associated with poorer mental health.

This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Interns and Nurses

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe differences in the importance of religious participation and religious coping for Black and White Americans.
  2. Explain how religious coping can be positive as well as in some cases detrimental to physical and mental health.
  3. Explain how positive and negative interactions with church and family members are associated with mental health outcomes for Black Americans.
  4. Identify and discuss the impact of social support and social isolation on mental health.
