The outcome of migration from one geographical region to another produces both positive and negative consequences. Some individuals who undertake such migration may suffer from a ‘trauma of dislocation’. This discussion will center on some of the variables of this trauma, and how therapists who treat these individuals should adapt the therapeutic frame to their patient’s needs.

  • Describe the clinical features of the trauma of dislocation.
  • Use better with patients facing such difficulties.
  • Identify the ways in which cultural differences impact upon communication.
  • Discuss ways in which clinicians can treat immigrant patients better in psychotherapy.
  • Describe ways that clinicians can be more attuned to immigrant patient’s communications.
