June 11, 2026: Borus Award in Education - Reflections on a Life in Psychiatry: The Transformation of a Profession

Reflections on a Life in Psychiatry: The Transformation of a Profession

Description:

Over the course of a career, psychiatrists will see their field go through a revolution of theoretical and practical frameworks, pedagogy, and changes to the activities in which psychiatrists are expected or permitted to be involved.  In thinking about preparing the future generation of psychiatrists for their careers, therefore, it is essential to gain the skills to be able to be flexible, adaptable, and integrate new and sometimes unexpected approaches, practices, and mindsets into their practice.  By reflecting on several phases of changing psychiatric practice that have occurred over the time of his own career, Dr. Mufson will discuss the multiple transformations he has undergone as a psychiatrist, and learning principles that may be useful for current trainees and practicing psychiatrists looking to embrace change and clinical uncertainty.

Target Audience

This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Attendees will understand generational and ongoing changes to the scope of practice of the psychiatrist.
  2. Attendees will explore helpful principles by which psychiatrists can embrace change and stay on the cutting edge of psychiatry throughout their careers.
  3. Attendees will appreciate approaches to teaching in psychiatry that are helpful in learning how to adapt to field-level changes over the course of one’s career in psychiatry.
