Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe how to conceptualize psychopathology (including suicidal thoughts and behaviors) as emerging from complex dynamical systems.
- Discuss the role of intensive longitudinal data and machine learning for capturing and modeling the complexity of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
- Describe how theory-driven and data-driven computational approaches can advance our understanding, prediction, and prevention of suicide and related problems.
Shirley B. Wang, A.M. is an incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Yale University (starting July 2024). She is a PhD candidate at Harvard University in Clinical Psychology with a secondary in Computational Science and Engineering, and is currently completing her predoctoral internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Center for Precision Psychiatry and the Center for Digital Mental Health. Shirley’s research aims to develop and harness methods that can capture and model the immense complexity of psychopathology–including mathematical, computational, and intensive longitudinal methods. She is particularly interested in formal mathematical modeling of these phenomena as complex dynamical systems, and developing machine learning models for risk prediction using data from smartphones and wearables. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and published in over 50 scientific papers and book chapters. Shirley’s research has also been recognized through the receipt of several awards, and she was recently listed as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30in Healthcare.
