Most educators do not have a comprehensive understanding of the indications, mechanisms, and side effects of psychiatric medications commonly prescribed to youth, despite being critical partners to the health care provider in the monitoring of these medications Consequently, they may be less able to provide a comprehensive description of the effects and side effects of medications for mental health conditions, leading to less capable support of the students. To bridge this gap, this lecture will cover the broad classes of psychiatric medications in youth, their potential side effects and how to manage them in the classroom/school setting.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training session, school personnel should be able to:

1) List the primary indications for commonly prescribed psychiatric medications in youth, including antidepressants, stimulants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers

2) Identify the potential side effects and adverse reactions associated with psychiatric medications, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and communication with healthcare providers

3) Describe strategies for fostering collaboration between educators, mental health professionals, and families to support students receiving psychiatric treatment while promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment.
