Exit Wounds: Creating A Culturally Responsive Public Health Approach to Research, Policy, and Practice for Black Survivors of Homicide Victims

This presentation elucidates the structurally disproportionate reality of homicide victimization for Black people by highlighting the root causes and consequences of experiencing chronic cumulative Black death. This presentation invites participants to engage in embracing a fundamental paradigm shift in the way we think, define, assess, and respond to homicide violence and victimization in Black communities. This presentation is designed to not only inform but also inspire researchers and medical and mental health practitioners on pathways for understanding the ways we should support and provide services to Black survivors of homicide victims.
Target Audience
This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify attitudes and perspectives related to the experience of homicide for Black communities.
- Discuss the coping strategies of Black survivors of homicide victims.
- Describe culturally responsive public health approaches to research, policy, and practice related to the provision of services for Black survivors of homicide victims.

Tanya L. Sharpe, MSW, PhD
Tanya L. Sharpe, MSW, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Endowed Chair in Social Work in the Global Community at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. She is the founder and director of The Centre for Research & Innovation for Black Survivors of Homicide Victims (The CRIB). A community-engaged researcher, Dr. Sharpe is committed to developing culturally responsive approaches that support Black communities in navigating the trauma of homicide violence. Her work provides scholars and practitioners with frameworks to understand how socio-cultural factors shape the grief experiences of Black survivors, leading to the development of culturally appropriate interventions, best practices, and tools for measuring grief outcomes.
Before joining the University of Toronto in 2018, Dr. Sharpe served as an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work for 11 years. She has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Aaron Rosen Lecturer Award, the SSWR Senior Social Policy Researcher Award, and Boston College School of Social Work’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Her contributions have also been recognized with the Governor of Maryland’s Victim Assistance Award, the NASW Maryland Chapter’s Social Work Educator of the Year, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Diversity Recognition Award. Through her research and advocacy, Dr. Sharpe continues to drive systemic change and advance culturally responsive strategies to support Black communities impacted by homicide.
