Overview
15 Years Later and the Impostor Syndrome is Still Real, and Other Lessons Learned on My Healthcare Leadership Path
Description:
Given C-L psychiatrists’ clinical expertise in caring for patients at the complex interface of medicine and psychiatry, these physicians may be well poised to enter healthcare leadership roles. As healthcare is facing a multitude of challenges, we will examine what foundational knowledge the subspecialty fellowship provides as well as what additional training and support the C-L psychiatrist may need to be an effective healthcare leader. Potential leadership strategies to improve important physician workforce concerns will be discussed.
Target Audience
This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify why training in Consultation-Liaison psychiatry primes physicians within this subspecialty to enter healthcare leadership roles and what additional supports may be needed to help new leaders succeed in their role.
- Discuss multiple current healthcare workforce challenges that psychiatric leaders must address, including moral injury and loss of autonomy with increasing trends in physician unionization, high rates of burnout, and gender disparities in academic advancement, which are even greater for racially and ethnically diverse women.
- Describe systemic factors and potential leadership strategies to improve these crucial healthcare workforce concerns.
