May 23, 2024: 1st Joseph Biederman, M.D., Lecture in Psychiatry: Pediatric Bipolar Disorder

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder

Thursday, May 23rd, 2024

12:00-1:00 P.M., Via Zoom

Despite an opportunity to prevent adult psychopathology associated with bipolar disorder through early diagnosis in children, debate over diagnostic criteria and limited awareness of the unique features of mania in children contribute to misdiagnosis. Pediatric bipolar disorder occurs in a sizable number of children who are severely affected by explosive irritability and mixed states, requiring aggressive intervention. Treatment options are challenging due to difficulty in overlapping diagnoses and adverse effects of medications. This presentation will focus on identifying bipolar disorder in children and discussing potential treatment options
