Navigating Digital Mental Health Apps : A Guide for Psychiatrists

Digital interventions such as mobile applications have emerged as promising tools to deliver and augment mental health care given their potential for scalability and increased access to care. Yet the integration of mobile apps and digital health services into routine mental health clinical workflows remains insufficient. One challenge is that mental health providers may not be well-versed enough regarding the purpose, safety, and efficacy of these apps to recommend or prescribe them: it is estimated that > 10,000 mental health applications exist and, professional clinical organizations do not provide guidelines for evaluating mobile apps, and the efficacy data for these tools remain inconclusive. This talk will describe a framework that clinicians can employ when evaluating mental health applications which answers this question. We will start by reviewing the current landscape of mental health applications, describe the challenges and barriers to widespread integration of mobile mental health applications in clinical practice. Finally, we will demonstrate a framework for evaluation of mental apps to guide clinicians in their practice.

Henry Kosorochi Onyeaka is a resident psychiatrist and is currently the chief resident of addiction psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital, both Harvard Medical School-affiliated teaching hospitals, where he also serves as a teaching fellow. Prior to residency, he completed his undergraduate degree and medical education from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology in Ghana and then subsequently completed a master's degree in public health with a focus on quantitative methods at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Onyeaka is passionate and active in investigating the role of digital tools and technologies for psychiatry, substance use disorders, and chronic diseases. Dr. Onyeaka’s research focuses on the intersection of digital technology and mental health, aiming to enhance access and outcomes for individuals with psychiatric conditions through innovative research. His work includes studying the impact of digital health tools and wearable technology on patient engagement and treatment efficacy. He is an editorial board member in prominent journals like Academic Psychiatry, JMIR Mental Health and NPP-Digital Psychiatry Neuroscience, contributing significantly to the discourse on digital psychiatry.
