McLean Psychiatry Grand Rounds 2026: Jakab Lecture - Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder (“BD squared”): Who We Are and What We Are Up To - October 21, 2026

Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder (“BD squared”): Who We Are and What We Are Up To

Wednesday, October 21, 2026, 12 - 1 pm

Description:

In this presentation, Dr. Burdick will introduce the challenges that have faced researchers and clinicians alike who work in the area of bipolar disorder research and care. She will introduce a relatively new initiative in the field, called Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder – known as BD-squared. She will describe the mission and the work that has been done to date, with a special focus on one arm of the initiative called the Integrated Network (IN-BD). The IN-BD is unique in that it embeds a longitudinal cohort study within a learning health network – enrolling people with bipolar disorder into a deep-phenotyping research study at sites where they also receive clinical care. This model allows for deep learning from research-grade assessment to be combined with point-of-care data collected via participating clinicians and the electronic health record. This network is designed to cut down on the time it takes for research learnings to make it to the clinic to improve care for people in near real time. Dr. Burdick will describe what progress has been made in this initiative over its first 2 years in existence and hopes to inspire more awareness and investment into this disabling condition.
