5th Avery Weisman, M.D., Lecture in Consultation Psychiatry: Predicting the Future?

This presentation will explore challenges that arise at the intersection of psychiatry, medicine, law, and ethics, and discuss directions for the future. We will highlight recurrent themes and approaches to solutions that arise in practice in consultation-liaison psychiatry, including: decisional capacity, surrogate decision making, social determinants of health, and end-of-life care. The presentation will consider the past, present, and future of practice in consultation-liaison psychiatry.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the complex interplay of psychiatry, medicine, law, and ethics in consultation-liaison psychiatry by exploring examples of guardianship, end-of-life care, and crisis standards of care
  2. Identify common scenarios raising medico-legal-ethical decision-making challenges in consultation-liaison psychiatry
  3. Describe practical approaches to address ethical-legal challenges in the psychiatric care of the medically ill
