MGH PGR: April 1, 2021 6th Annual Susan N. Sweeney, Lecture in Bipolar Disorder Neurocognitive Heterogeneity in Bipolar Disorder - Clinical and Biological Correlates

April 1, 2021 6th Annual Susan N. Sweeney, Lecture in Bipolar Disorder Neurocognitive Heterogeneity in Bipolar Disorder - Clinical and Biological Correlates

This lecture will describe evidence to suggest that both early life risk factors and illness-associated risk factors contribute to differential cognitive and functional outcomes in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), pointing toward both neurodevelopmental and neuroprogressive mechanism that drive disease. Further, by addressing the heterogeneity that is inherent to BD, we can better identify modifiable treatment targets to promote full recovery and optimize quality of life in every BD patient. Current limitations in the field include a lack of large-scale, long term, longitudinal studies that can address the complex and dynamic nature of the illness.

Target Audience

This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Interns and Nurses

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the cognitive profile common to bipolar disorder and compare it with that seen in schizophrenia
  • Identify the clinical correlates and biomarkers of cognitive impairment in bipolar patients
  • Describe the cognitive trajectory in bipolar disorder including both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative processes
