MGH PGR: December 10, 2020 9th Annual Gary Jacobson, M.D., Susan B. Jacobson, Lecture on Promising Innovations in Psychiatry: Rethinking American Indian Community Mental Health: Lessons, Challenges, & Opportunities

December 10, 2020 9th Annual Gary Jacobson, M.D., Susan B. Jacobson, Lecture on Promising Innovations in Psychiatry: Rethinking American Indian Community Mental Health: Lessons, Challenges, & Opportunities

The indigenous peoples of North America are heirs to the shattering legacy of European colonization leading to an epidemic of “mental health” problems. And yet, conventional mental health services such as counseling and psychotherapy depend on assumptions and aspirations that may not fit well with indigenous cultural sensibilities.

This presentation will review the implicit logics that structure mental health service delivery as well as key ethno-psychological commitments of many American Indian communities in an effort to re-imagine counseling services in a manner that truly centers indigenous perspectives.

Target Audience

This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Interns and Nurses

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize American Indian dissatisfaction with conventional mental health treatments and services
  • Explain American Indian commitments to traditional cultural practices and activities
  • Discuss characteristics of an alternative Indigenous framework for mental health concerns
