Frontotemporal dementia is a devastating illness for patients and families, but offers tremendous opportunities to advance our understanding of brain circuits subserving language, emotion, motivation, and social behavior. FTD clinical care and research benefits from a multidisciplinary approach drawing on psychiatry, neurology, psychology, speech language pathology, social work, genetics, radiology, and neuropathology. This lecture will touch on each of these topics.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the most common types of Frontotemporal Dementia clinical syndromes and their diagnostic criteria
  • Discuss the primary neuropathologic forms of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration
  • Compare the major genetic forms of FTLD and how they are being studied to understand the earliest symptoms and test therapeutics
