The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, coupled with protests over the deaths of unarmed black people has exposed the persistent effects of structural racism on health in US society. Unfortunately, structural racism is evident in psychiatric assessment, diagnoses, and treatment, and is responsible for significant mental health inequities and poor mental health outcomes. This presentation will examine structural racism and its manifestations in psychiatry, and will discuss possible interventions to dismantle structural racism in psychiatry.
