The 12th Annual Olga Danieli-Fava, Lecture in Psychotherapy Grand Rounds: COVID and the Telehealth Transformation of Mental Health Treatment and Services: Navigating New Opportunities and Challenges

The response to the COVID pandemic has transformed the delivery of behavioral health care and caused widespread use and diffusion of telehealth in the form of videoconferencing. This requires providers to be adept at working with patients through video as well as across multiple technologies and platforms, appropriately adapting technology and clinical processes to meet the individual needs and resources of a patient. The use of technology in mental health treatment has the potential to address health inequities although many of they have been further exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. This talk will address the state of the field of telemental health and technology prior to the COVID pandemic as well as the impacts of COVID on behavioral health care including administrative, regulatory and clinical aspects, and challenges in health inequities. The future implications of practice during and after the COVID emergency will be explored and how best to leverage and adapt telehealth to meet individual patient needs.

This talk will address the state of the field of telemental health and technology prior to the COVID pandemic, the impacts of COVID on behavioral health care including administrative, regulatory and clinical aspects and explore the future implications of practice during and after the COVID emergency.

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Explain technology trends impacting mental health services and treatment prior to the COVID pandemic.
  2. Summarize the role of technology in transforming mental health care service provision during the pandemic and anticipate post-pandemic trends in care transformation.
  3. Discuss current and emerging evidence, best practices for telehealth clinical care, research and future directions in mental health services.
