Facilitating Resilience Following Workplace Trauma
The last 2 years have brought unprecedented behavioral health challenges, but while COVID has been the one tragic constant, it was not alone - civil unrest and racial injustice protests, wildfires, natural disasters, and the breaching of the US Capitol have left businesses and communities alike reeling and confused. And it’s not as if “typical” crises like bank robberies or factory accidents took a break – far from it! Through it all, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) have played a critical role in facilitating resilience and delivering psychological first aid to the workplace. This presentation will examine the quantitative scale, scope, and complexity involved in providing disruptive event management (DEM) over the past two years, drawing on a data base of 50,000 crisis response requests on behalf of EAPs. Crucial clinical/technical service modifications will be explored, including virtual delivery and cultural intelligence. Finally, the “lessons learned” will be considered, with a focus on differentiating between Post-Traumatic Growth and Post-Traumatic Depreciation.

- Explain the unique occurrence of multiple, coterminous mass events over the last 2 years and their implications for behavioral health in the workplace.
- Discuss the differentiation between Post-Traumatic Growth and Post-Traumatic Depreciation in a healthcare setting during the 2020-21 pandemic.
