The 1st Prager Lecture in Child Psychiatry Grand Rounds: Achieving Equity within Psychiatry Medical Education
This session will discuss the current pediatric mental health crisis in the United States and the ongoing shortages of child and adolescent psychiatrists while reflecting on the growing need to attract a diverse pool of medical students into the field of psychiatry. This session will discuss some of the challenges that underrepresented in medicine (URM) medical students experience that contribute to inequities within the clinical learning environment, including: the role of structural racism on the achievement gap among URMs, the impact of implicit bias in feedback and narrative evaluations of learners, and how these experiences may deter a student from considering a career in child & adolescent psychiatry. An approach for achieving equity within psychiatry medical education will be discussed through the use of a competency-based model, along with strategies to provide ongoing supports to URM students and the need to provide appropriate and timely feedback to reduce bias in evaluations.

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
- Describe the current challenges within the field of child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) including the growing pediatric mental health crisis and workforce shortage.
- Identify inequities within medical student grading and evaluations which negatively impact underrepresented in medicine interest in pursuing psychiatry and psychiatric subspecialties including CAP.
- Discuss approaches to achieving equity within medical education in psychiatry.
