A Path Forward: Best Practices and Lessons Learned to Attract, Support and Promote a Diverse and Inclusive Trainee Workforce

Recruiting a diverse workforce is a national and institutional imperative. Current trainees in our programs are our best recruiters. However, there continue to be significant barriers to recruitment of trainees underrepresented in medicine, including bias in recruiting and in the learning environment. In this interactive session, Drs. Torres and Olson will focus on institutional lessons learned during these past virtual recruitment seasons, defining forms of bias, identifying strategies and action steps all faculty can take to address bias and create a supportive and respectful environment during the recruitment process and beyond.

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Describe MGB, MGH and Psychiatry residency match data by race, ethnicity
  2. Identify lessons learned and best practices for inclusive virtual recruitment
  3. Identify action steps on how to address bias during the recruitment process and beyond 
  4. Describe action steps and future training and faculty development plans for fostering an inclusive and respectful work environment
