From Grit to Success: A Story of Purpose, Science and Impact

 

Description: 

In her professorial lecture, Dr. Ana-Maria Vranceanu shares how grit, purpose, and community shaped her journey from a childhood in Communist Romania to leading transformative research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Drawing on lessons from her father’s determination and her mother’s compassion, she shows how resilience turns rejection into opportunity and how mentorship and collaboration can fuel meaningful science. Through stories behind the behavioral interventions she developed and the founding of CHOIR, she reminds us that true success isn’t measured by titles or grants, but by building science that heals and communities that endure—with relentless optimism at the core.

Target Audience

This program is intended for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General and Family Practice Physicians, Psychiatric Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of mentors and collaborators in building a sustainable academic research career, and identify at least two concrete strategies for cultivating each.
  2. Discuss strategies for building a career that integrates personal meaning, clinical relevance, and scientific rigor.
  3. Design a plan to build or nurture a supportive research “family tree” (network of mentees, collaborators, sponsors) to both receive and give support, especially during times of adversity or transition.

Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD

Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, researcher, teacher, clinician, and mentor. She is the David T. Rovee PhD and Joanne V Rovee Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, the Director of the Officer of Research Careers within the Center for Academic Development and Enrichment (CADE) at MassGeneral Brigham, the Associate Chief of Research and the founding director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research (CHOIR) within the Department of Psychiatry at MassGeneral Brigham.  Her research program is focused on the development, testing, and implementation of behavioral interventions for medical patients, caregivers, and dyads in both hospital and community settings, with a particular focus on acute and chronic pain and neurological illness.
