Understanding and Treating Restrictive Eating Disorders

 

Description: 

In this lecture, I will define the restrictive eating disorder diagnoses, including anorexia nervosa, atypical anorexia nervosa, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. I will review key literature on the longitudinal outcomes of anorexia nervosa, highlight what is known about diagnostic crossover, and its relevance to nosology. Finally, I will discuss neurobiological mechanisms of the restrictive eating disorders and introduce novel treatment approaches that target these mechanisms to improve outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. To define the restrictive eating disorder diagnoses and describe the relevance of diagnostic crossover to nosology.
  2. To discuss the range of mechanisms underlying restrictive eating disorder phenotypes and how they can be studied.
  3. To explain novel psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy approaches for the restrictive eating disorders that target mechanisms in order to improve outcomes.

Kamryn T. Eddy, Ph.D.

Dr. Kamryn Eddy is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the Co-Director of the Eating Disorders Clinical and Research Program (EDCRP) at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Associate Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the AMC Department of Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham. 

She is a child psychologist by training whose NIH- and foundation-funded clinical research has focused on understanding the pathophysiology of restrictive eating disorders and applying this knowledge to develop and test novel treatments. She has written more than 200 scientific papers and is the co-author of two books describing her novel ARFID treatment, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: Children, Adolescents, and Adults, and The Picky Eater’s Recovery Book, and a third forthcoming book describing her novel cognitive-behavioral therapy for anorexia nervosa. Within the EDCRP, she provides patient care and clinical and research supervision to doctoral students, pre-doctoral interns, psychiatry residents, psychiatry fellows, and junior faculty, and more broadly, she provides psychotherapy training on CBT-AR and a novel CBT for anorexia nervosa nationally and internationally. Dr. Eddy is highly regarded as a mentor, collaborator, and international leader in the field of eating disorders, having served as past President of the Eating Disorders Research Society and current member of the National Eating Disorders Association’s Research Advisory Council. Locally, she is also the Vice-Chair of the Psychiatry Research Fellowship Committee at HMS.
