Home Base: Brain Health Summit 2024

September 11, 2024 to September 12, 2024

Home Base Brain Health Summit - September 11-12, 2024

The Home Base Brain Health Summit is a live hybrid two-day conference at MGH Institute for Health Professions located at 1 Constitution Wharf in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

There will also be a livestream of the conference available.

Current practice guidelines in treatment of active-duty military service members and veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) emphasize manualized, evidence-based Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing as the gold standard of treatment, typically once a week for 12 weeks. Psychotropic medications that are useful in PTSD include the FDA-approved medications paroxetine, sertraline, and off-label use of venlafaxine. In addition, prazosin may be useful for trauma-related nightmares.

The Inaugural Home Base Annual Brain Health Summit examines the latest research and treatment innovations in military Special Operations Forces, veterans, and families suffering from the invisible wounds of war. In recognition of the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program will provide comprehensive insights crucial for the holistic well-being of warriors throughout the lifespan. It will share updates in the Home Base Intensive Clinical Program with mass dose evidence based therapy, Families of the Fallen, Children of the Fallen, and Native American cohorts.

The Brain Health Summit will incorporate interactive components including virtual reality.  Perhaps most significantly, the program will emphasize a translational approach, providing tangible methods for incorporating these insights into daily clinical practice. Insights and best practice approaches provided will allow professionals from a variety of fields, including psychiatry, physiatry, neurology, primary care, physical therapy, psychology, and nursing, across a variety of settings, including both military and veteran treatment settings and civilian treatment settings, to swiftly provide evidence based, innovative care.
