MGHPGR: 12th George B. Murray, M.D., Limbic Lecture in Psychiatry
12th George B. Murray, M.D., Limbic Lecture in Psychiatry: “The limbic system in major depression: a circuit based perspective from treatment research”
Starting with Aristotle, the basis for emotional behavior has been a subject of inquiry and speculation. Darwin and subsequently James proposed that emotions in animals would be similar to human emotions and that the basic emotions occurred in response to afferent feedback loops which were then encoded into the cerebral cortex memory system. These efforts, along with the work of Papez, resulted in the concept of the limbic lobe, a complex system related to emotional functioning. This lecture will describe the evolving concept of the limbic system. The findings from region of interest activation studies as well as network to network connectivity and whole brain connectivity will be discussed. The lecture will present findings from the role of the limbic system in emotional systems and focus on disturbances in limbic system function and connectivity that contribute to major depression.
Target Audience
This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Fellows, Residents, Interns and Nurses
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
- Describe the neuroanatomy of the limbic circuit and the function of constituent brain regions.
- Describe how changes in anatomy and function of limbic regions are related to psychiatric disorders.
- Describe the imbalances in limbic circuitry connections with other brain networks that lead to mental health disorders.
