Clinical practices in health care systems must have review processes and procedures in place to limit adverse outcomes with identifying practices gaps and improving existing knowledge of physicians. One such process is the morbidity and mortality conference which aims to focus on review of adverse outcomes to identify system or practice errors and improve patient safety.
Diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa can be found in the DSM-5 within the feeding and eating disorders category. While the diagnostic criteria for anorexia can present as straight forward (based on significant low body weight, calorie restriction, and intense fear of weight gain), the multidisciplinary care involved in treating a patient with anorexia nervosa is quite complex. This complexity often necessitates collaboration between primary care/medicine professionals, psychiatry, psychology, and dieticians, among others. Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders, and discussing methods of effective treatment across various levels of care (inpatient, outpatient, residential, etc.) is necessary to care for some of psychiatry’s sickest patients.
This is achieved through structured case-based discussion of specific patients, root-cause analysis, and collaborative discussion among physicians. Through presentation and discussion of a case example and literature review, participants in the conference will enhance their understanding and knowledge of treatment options for treating eating disorders.

This program is intended primarily for Psychiatrists; other allied staff, such as Psychologists, Physicians from other specialties, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers, are welcome to attend.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify anorexia nervosa diagnostic criteria as well as learn to recognize high risk clinical features associated with the disease
- Describe the current standards of eating disorder protocols as they apply to both medical and psychiatric care
- Analyze clinical, ethical, and systemic factors contributing to AMA discharges in patients with anorexia nervosa such as impaired decisional capacity, treatment ambivalence, stigma, and gaps in care coordination
