ForwardMass General Brigham Academic Medical Centers Psychiatry Department Morbidity and Mortality Series 2025-2026
The integrated 2025-2026 BWH and MGH Department of Psychiatry Morbidity and Mortality Seriies will continue to be held on the second Tuesday of every month from 12:00-1:00 pm starting Tuesday, October 14th through June 9th 2026.
The Morbidity and Mortality conference will be hybrid with in-person speakers alternating campuses each month and a live webinar broadcast for remote attendees. The host campus, on-site viewing location, and webinar link will be included in the monthly announcements.
All department members are invited to attend Morbidity and Mortality conference at either campus or virtually via webinar.
On the MGH campus, the Morbidity and Mortality conference will be held in the Hackett Conference Room, Bulfinch 350 which will also be a live viewing location for the conference when the speaker is not on-site at MGH.
On the BWH campus, the Morbidity and Mortality conference and the small group discussions will be held at various locations on campus which will be announced via email every month.

The Morbidity and Mortality conference is a monthly conference attended by psychiatrists, residents, and other allied professionals. Quality improvement and investigation of safety events within the department illuminates breaks in care delivery and assists the department in remedies towards improved patient outcomes. As part of the conference, there is a literature item presented which pertains to the content of each conference session for the expansion of physician knowledge as it pertains to the improvement of quality of care delivered.
The objective of the Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference is to serve as a discussion point in a collaborative environment in which participants will learn from adverse clinical outcomes and safety events, modify behavior, prevent repetition of unfruitful or harmful practices, and identify system-based sources of error and possible remedies. It is a forum to discuss particularly challenging cases with the overall goal of improving patient care. Case selection is based on the framework of outcome expectedness.
Through the modality of the conference, physicians explore a systematic review of measurement of quality improvement including cause-and-effect models which take into account variable factors such as procedural, environment, tools, people, and policy. The goal of the analysis is to lead to change in decrease unintended outcomes via implementation of individual or systematic procedures to limited unintended outcomes and develop procedures to review results for patient safety to improve individual performance. This conference aims to improve physician competence by expounding on case-based issues with a focus on review and evaluation of clinical practices. Analysis of relevant system-related issues together with a mixture of cases/discussions around clinical decision making without judgment is essential to the growth of physicians at any stage of their practice.

Target Audience
This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, Physicians
This program is intended primarily for Psychiatrists, other allied staff such as Psychologists, Physicians from other specialties, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers, are welcome to attend. Participants can receive up to 9.0 CE.
Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, MGH Institute of Health Professions is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
9.0 Physicians
MGH Institute of Health Professions designates this live activity for a maximum of 9.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.

MGH Institute of Health Professions designates this activity for 9.0 contact hours for nurses. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME and ANCC.

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs. MGH Institute of Health Professions designates this activity for 9.0 CE credit.
9.0 Social Workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, MGH Institute of Health Professions is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. MGH Institute of Health Professions maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 9.0 clock hours for continuing education credits.
