Advancing the Science and Care of Women with PTSD and Substance Use Disorders

Women experience disproportionately high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal traumas and increasing rates of substance use disorders (SUD). This presentation will examine biological, psychological, and social factors that may contribute to the development and persistence of co-occurring PTSD+SUD in women, as well as advances in treatment. Particular attention will be given to the shift from sequential treatment models and abstinence-based approaches to integrated, trauma-focused care including harm reduction approaches. Empirical evidence from clinical trials, including studies evaluating Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE), large-scale collaborative programs of research focused on PTSD+SUD, and current clinical practice guidelines will be reviewed. The presentation will conclude by identifying critical directions for the field.

3) Evaluate evidence supporting integrated, trauma-focused treatment for PTSD and SUD
