Introduction to Child Mental Health

This module will provide an overview of child mental health, setting the stage for a multi-module program. The course begins with a description of historical perspectives on childhood; the role of nature vs. nurture on child development; the etiology and trajectory of psycho-pathology and the child in the family and community. The module adopts a strength-based model with a focus on the capabilities and resilience of children. Finally, it covers the basic ethical principles in working with children and the professional opportunities the field of child mental health provides.

Learning Objectives

After this module participants should be able to:

  • Identify stages of psycho-social across the lifespan
  • Identify family-based interventions that promotion connection within a family
  • Demonstrate the use of several interventions aimed at diminishing family conflict
  • Demonstrate an understanding of strength-based approach to child development
  • Gaining a solid understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic expressions of developmental psychopathology
  • Describe a diagnostic overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
