Promoting Healthy Emotional Development in Toddlers and Preschoolers

Early childhood is a crucial stage of development for fostering healthy attachment relationships and for learning healthy ways of regulating emotions. Pediatric primary care is usually the first point of contact for many parents/caregivers with concerns about their child’s emotional development and specifically for questions about how to manage their young child’s tantrums. Many parents/caregivers have a hard time determining what is developmentally appropriate behavior and what might be a sign of a more serious developmental or emotional problem. Pediatricians are in the role of screening emotional development in young children, providing parent guidance, and referring to specialists when needed. Dr. Chiappa has extensive experience working as a Clinical Psychologist integrated into pediatric primary care settings, and she will teach us the neurobiological underpinnings of tantrums, how to assess for more serious mental health issues in young children, and how to coach parents with effective emotion regulation strategies.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the basic neurobiology of tantrums and emotion regulation with caregivers of toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Explain caregiver interventions for both internalizing and externalizing behavior in toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Assess for more serious mental health issues in toddlers and preschoolers, and identify when referral for specialist is needed.
