Child and Adolescents Mental Health Assessment (Cohort 2)

This interactive course provides an orientation and overview of child and adolescent psychological assessment. These skills are useful for clinicians in all practice settings across mental health, primary care, social work, and psychology.

While estimates vary, roughly 8 to 10% of children are identified as having learning or developmental disabilities, and over 20% of children have a diagnosable mental illness that can impact learning and school functioning. Intervention for children experiencing such challenges supports a positive developmental trajectory, and a comprehensive assessment to better understand the etiology of the learning challenge and to inform the intervention choices is essential. This course, led by Dr. Ellen Braaten will help demystify the evaluation process. It will provide a review of best practices in the assessment of a variety of behaviors and conditions

An array of reading resources, videos and experiential approaches are used to enhance the learning experience. Virtual discussion follows each lecture during the same week. Each virtual discussion enhances the knowledge and skill acquisition with the exchange of cultural definitions, cultural assessment of family values, codes of conduct, rules and expectations to formulate intervention strategies.

This course is pass/fail. You must score 50% or greater on the final exam to pass.

Learning Objectives

After this module participants should be able to:

  • Identify the types of assessments (screening, focused assessment, diagnostic assessment, neuropsychological assessment) and when they are appropriate to screen children and identify those at high risk
  • Identify how psychologists formulate and test their hypotheses through the assessment process.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of the various methods used to assess children.
  • Create a structured, systematic approach to interpreting and evaluating testing reports provided by other professionals
  • Apply neurocognitive findings to a biopsychosocial formulation
  • Use assessment findings from other professionals to develop appropriate interventions
  • Identify appropriate and useful resources and references
  • Use appropriate screening tools to assess the children at risk for developmental, learning, or emotional difficulties
